Botswana launched the Energy Compact program at Hotel 4:30 in the new CBD, Gaborone, Botswana.  

The event was attended by the Minister of Minerals and Energy Ms. Bogolo Kenewendo, Chief Executive Officer’s(CEO) of local parastatals, CEO’s of Commercial banks, diplomats, Ambassadors, African Development Bank and the World Bank.

Officials say 65% of the country’s population have access to electricity and overriding purpose of the energy compact initiative is to provide access for all Batswana by 2030.

“Earlier this year we travelled to Tanzania and the President committed to advancing … energy mix in our energy production. Since then, we have taken journey to deal with energy compact (program).”

The Government intends to increase the production capacity of electricity, which would reduce costs she explained.

“[We] intend to enhance tradability in electricity and enhance stability in the region … soon we will show what energy innovation can look like … The energy capacity will provide affordable, clean affordable electricity to all Batswana by 2030,” said Kenewendo.

She reminded the public that “Botswana has been authorised to issue international renewable energy certificates” and added that the government intends to cause a “15% reduction in greenhouse by 2030 … [and] reduce dependence on imported power … we will develop with the support of the World Bank”.   

“This is not a government initiative but it is a local program to ensure that all Batswana have access to electricity by 2030,” she said.

The World Bank representative explained that electricity connectivity is an important part of the World Bank’s agenda.

“The mission 300 is to connect 300 million Africans to electricity. Since its inception World Bank has already spent US$8 billion …  [We are] trying to mobilise resources … US$ 3.5 million [has been advanced to the government] to mobilise to help capacitate for promotion of ITPC’s,” said Chief Regional Power Systems Officer of African Development Bank, Anders Pedersen.

Pedersen spoke about the significant national potential of the program.

He said, “Important to stress mission 300 compact belongs to Botswana … It can be developed into major resource for country … [it] can be an enabler for new industries that going to be in this country.”
