The Botswana’s World Athletics Relay committee has revealed that tickets for the historic upcoming Word Relay Championships to be held in Botswana, which will be the first time they are held on African soil on the 2nd and 3rd May 2026 are now available.
The Chief Operating Officer(COO) of the 2026 World Athletics Relays, Bobby Gaseitsiwe, stressed that the that program has been finalized and the track has been ready since early February.
“We are looking forward to the 2nd May 1405hrs, when the first event start …the 3rd May 1402hrs when the finals will be happening. It’s going to be like that nothing will change …” he enthused.
The Chief Executive Officer 2026 World Athletics Relays, Moses Bantsi, urged the public to support the event.
“This is a historic event for Botswana and the eyes of the world will be on us. So, I urge the public to buy tickets when they come, not at the last minute,” he said.
There are no physical tickets, the public will use digital tickets.
“Each ticket has a unique QR code, you will have the code delivered digitally … we are trying to avoid the duplication of fake tickets,” said Tumelo Lekolwane, Tickito’s Ticket Sales and Marketing Director.
Additional parking spaces will be available at Gaborone Secondary School (GSS) grounds where buses will ferry spectators to the field. The committee said it kept the prices low as possible.
“This is for the benefit of this country, we have tried with the prices. We need to remember that this event cost over P47 million,” said Bantsi.
The committee was upbeat about the stadium and general preparations.
“The ticket people have done a good job. The tickets started at a very high price. We need every Motswana to watch this event … I dispute that the track is 99% ready, it is a 100% ready and the University of Botswana [athlete warm up] stadium [will be ready] … in a couple of weeks we will be shining.
Botswana made its mark in world relays when it won silver medal at the 2017 World Relay Championships in Bahamas. Now for the first time, locals will be able to watch a major global sports event live at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.
The event ranks third in prestige after the Olympics and World Championships. It will feature the fastest athletes in the world, including Letsile Tebogo’s archrival, Noah Lyles.
